Marius Ghenea – a successful entrepreneur. From Zero to Hero.

He is 42 and his name is on the lips of every young entrepreneur from Romania. He was in the famous business TV Show called Arena Leilor (Lion’s Arena). He has published a book about entrepreneurship.

But he wasn’t always like this.

Zero. Marius Ghenea was, back in the nineties, a student of Telecommunications and worked as a tourist guide,a  thing that helped him go abroad and broaden his horizons.

After that he was… an English teacher for six months and he calls it “an extraordinary experience” because his students might have taught him more than he taught them.

Next step? Assembling computers, but this business failed.

Next step? Working for the state at RENEL. He only lasted 11 months.

Then he started, along with some friend, an computer assembly company where he worked for eight years. He loved it.

Hero. From 2002 until 2012 he was the CEO of Flanco. In 2012 his Curriculum Vitae it’s impressive: he is a teacher, a business angel, an author and the president of the Romanian association for online stores. Among others.

In 2005 he had an estimated fortune of 10 millions of euro. But he said he didn’t know what being rich meant and that he doesn’t make long term plans.

He works a lot and he finds it hard to see himself as retired.

On Youtube you find him talking passionately about entrepreneurship. He is, after all, the author of the first Romanian book about it.

He believes creativity is a mixture of novelity and utility. For him being an entrepreneur means seeing the problems and coming with innovative solutions… and then applying them.

His vision is that a leader has to make to people feel like they own, like they create the projects they are involved in. Too much creativity can do harm, resulting in a continuous brainstorming. Creativity is maximum in our comfort zone.

Apart from work he loves travelling and has been to more than 100 countries. And, despite the fact that he’s very busy, he always finds time to support organizations of young people, being present on AIESEC conferences on more than once occasion.

This was the second story on our list. We wish you a truly Happy Easter and we’ll be back on Wednesday with a new story. Until then work hard, make it count!

Emi Gal – Young entrepreneur going big. From Zero to Hero.

We are presenting you today the first story from our “From Zero to Hero” series. We bring to you the story of a young entrepreneur that managed to make himself known earlier that other people graduate College. An example of innovation and what ideas in action can do.

He was 18 when he started his own company. He was 21 when he launched a television on the web and 23 when he won the most famous contest for web business ideas, Seedcamp. How did he get to this?

ZERO. At ten years old he was winning his pocket money by selling business cards to his teachers. At 15 he got his first job, but resigned only two months later because he didn’t like to work for somebody else. So he started working for himself, developing his skills and learning his from his mistakes. In fact he learned so much that at 21 he had thirteen people working for him.

In 2007 he launched BrainTV, one of the first online televisions from Romania.

In the same year he launched Vertimo, a search engine for the real estate market.

One year later he created the first legal and free site of music from Romania.

HERO.  So far he had started four companies. The one he manages at the moment is Brainient.

Emi Gal moved to London where his investors are and where he finds it easier to work. He says he had learned that in order to do business you must be curious – as he says he had always been- and that the best way to build a startup is to leverage different locations based on what you’re doing.

What is success to him?

1% talent

99% work

He says that creativity is not a moment, but a process. You start from something and reach something totally different. Everybody sees the tip of the iceberg and they congratulate you for the idea, but in fact, behind that success there are some years of intensive work that you don’t talk about.

For him success is doing what he likes, daily, and spending time with people that help him grow.

What do you need to have for success? The trio:  courage, curiosity and discipline.

What’s the example of an “WOW” idea for him? Harry Potter books.

For the endless creativity.

This was the story of Emi Gal, the Romanian who started by selling business cards and ended up owning a company in London. Keep an eye on our updates, we are preparing more for you.

We hope you enjoyed the lines above. For today we wish you to take a step further and implement your ideas. :)

Choose to live intensely!

Travel & Tourism is forecast to contribute some $6.5 trillion to the global economy  in 2012, according to World Travel& Tourism Council.

Of course, more than once, you must have been among the enthusiastic people who had the chance to see more or less known places and to get acquainted to the local culture, while spending their last penny on fridge magnets.

But have you ever seen yourself as more than a tourist? More than a link on the huge profit chain? How about a different approach towards discovering the world?

What if instead of running around with your camera, trying to capture all the monuments and the “epic moments” you could really feel like you are part of a certain place and you’re actually doing something for people?

If what you wish is to live an intense experience in an entirely different place, if what you want is to redefine yourself and discover others, away from home and from your daily routine, this is for you. You will never be as brave, as young and as passionate as you are now and what better time to focus on building your future?

This spring, AIESEC offers two International Internship programs, targeted towards different types of development: professional and personal.

  • Global Internship Program or GIP
  • Global Community Development Program or GCDP.

The Global Community Development Program offers international volunteering opportunities that contribute to your personal development. You will have the chance to work in social projects and to develop communities in one of the 110 countries AIESEC is present, like China, India, Brazil, Poland, Turkey, Indonesia, Czech Republic, Russia and many others.

What will you do?

You will work for an NGO in projects focused on social work, cultural education, event management and project management, training and development. Your work will be voluntary, but you will have most of your stay costs covered (accommodation and meals).

Also, note that usually, this kind of internship lasts between 6 to 12 weeks.

Global Internship Program offers international internships that contribute to your professional development, helping you specialize in a certain field. You will have the chance to work in companies, organizations and public institutions around the world.

You can choose specific fields, such as:

Management: Marketing, Project management, HR, Finance. Find out more

Education: Child learning, Student learning or Adult learning. Find out more

Technical: Web development, Software development. Find out more

These internships may last anywhere from 12 to 78 weeks.

*One of the main requirements of these programs is to have a good level of English in terms of speaking and writing, since you will be asked to communicate in this language solely during your internship. Also, for the Global Internship Program it is necessary to have at least 6 months of practical experience in your field.

For more information, visit our International Internship section on the website and find out everything you need to know about these programs.

My impact on the world

Let’s take an example…does pollution bother you? Easy. Ride a bike. It’s healthy and not only for you, but also for the environment. Don’t throw litter on the ground, sort your waste at home, recycle whatever you can and, most important, encourage others to do it too !

At some point, you’ll think that your effort doesn’t make any difference at all, but that’s not true ! Because there are millions of other people that are trying to improve their worlds and that are succeeding, by NOT giving up.

If you don’t want to feel alone, you can always join an NGO or anykind of organization that has the same goals as you have, or that can help you reach your own. I am positive that there is one near you and has a place for you. All you have to do is to be willing and to believe that you CAN be the change you want to see in the world !

I’ve heard it so many times, that I started to take it seriously and do as it says. I’m talking about a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. I am pretty sure you’ve heard it or seen it at least once in your life, but I wonder…Have [...]

CZECH OUT my experience!

Now I'm halfway through my internship and this is what I can say until now: it's GREAT!

I'm on a Global Community Development Program in the Czech Republic, in the city of Ostrava and I'm working on a project called Edison addressed to high school students, which has the purpose to increase cultural awareness among them. This is done with the help of an international team of 8 trainees (the awesome eight :) ) which delivers presentations on topics such as culture, traditions, geography, history, lifestyle etc. about our countries.

Now let's get to the cool parts :)

One of the things that I like the most about the project is definitely the internationalism. So we are 8 trainees gathered from all over the world (Romania, Hungary, Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, China, India), and during the preparation conference in Prague, before we came to Ostrava, we've also met other trainees that will be working there (people from Russia, Germany, Mexico, Egypt and surprisingly, Romania again :) ). Our team of 8 gets along really great, we already feel like family, we've become very good friends and we do a lot of things together: after school activities (sports, visiting, pubs, cafes etc), trips in the weekend (last weekend we went to Poland, this weekend we're going to Vienna and Prague, next weekend we're going for an AIESEC Conference) and so on.

Another great thing about this internship: we live in host families :) . Each week we go to a different high school, so each week we stay with a different family, with the host student being from that high school. This is really a great opportunity to experience the lifestyle of this country, see exactly how it's like in the family, plus you also get to meet a lot of people. And so far, every host family I've stayed in have been absolutely great. They are very hospitable people, they take really good care of us; the host students usually organize a lot of activities for us (for instance this week we were at an amusement park, last week we went karting).

And talking about the internship itself, about our work at the school, well so far it's been more than satisfying. The students really enjoyed our presentations, and although some of them were shy at the beginning, by the end of the week they were really proactive, asking a lot of questions and being more open. I've made friends with a lot of these students and I still keep in touch with them and we still usually meet up in the evenings in the pubs. The teachers at every school took really good care of us, we felt like celebrities there. They organized us opening ceremonies, visiting tours in the city and around it and the last week, the school even made a global village for us before our global village (they made presentations about the Czech Republic, about their traditions, lifestyle, they had workshops where they taught us how to dance polka, how to cook Czech food and so on).

So, so far the internship is going really good, I have 3 more weeks here and I'm sure they will be as awesome as these ones :) . The things that I will remain with after this internship will definitely be the friends (trainees, students, teachers, hosts), the great memories, a big personal experience (after all, this is what Global Community Development Program is all about) and no doubt, the things that I have and still will improve the most during the internship are my communication and presentation skill, which will really help me in the future.

Well that's all from here. Hope you enjoyed my story and this can be your story too if you'll go on an internship :)

Alexandra’s Global Community Development experience

The idea of me going on a Global Community Development Program came along with the desire of stepping out of my daily routine, of trying something new and thus I chose to leave to Turkey with a friend. Why Turkey? – I haven’t figured that yet, but what I do know is that I couldn’t have made a better choice. It was exactly what I wished for and I had a very complex experience with over 100 new friends.

The process was simple and I was accepted quicker than I thought I would. Once I got there, I didn’t know what I should expect. People around me seemed much too friendly and happy than I would have thought, since I was a more quiet and reserved person (I emphasize the word was, because I am no longer like that).

The first days we adjusted, visiting the city, the places I would frequently go to, I had a taste of the Turkish lifestyle and I met the people that were going to be part of my life for 6 weeks and that I would eventually grow very fond of. Once the project started, I figured I was exactly in the right place, doing exactly what I liked: I was interacting with new people every day, I had a group of students whom I helped improve their English and develop certain soft skills. The thing I didn’t notice at the moment was that helping them, I was actually helping myself too and what I taught them also remained in my mind.

I don’t think I can put this entire experience into words, it was extraordinary, it was a month and a half of joy, new friendships, smiles and tears, challenges and unforgetable moments that I will always carry with me in my life. Still, what most pleases me is the fact that, throughout this experience, I got to develop myself and I started to want more from my life.

http://www.blog.aiesec.ro/wp-content/uploads/no-image.png" />

I never understood the enthusiasm and devotion of the Global Community Development Program participants until I had the chance to be part of it. I had never fully imagined the impact such an experience could have brought to my life. I recall the words of a friend, who said: ”When you’ll come back from exchange, [...]
